Boulingua draws on a small set of public, openly available frameworks and tools. This page lists those references, acknowledges the inspiration behind the curricula, and provides a citation entry for anyone wishing to cite the project.

Inspiration for examination formats Link to heading

The DaF examination-format YAMLs are structurally inspired by the publicly documented model-exam handbooks of the Goethe-Institut (“Prüfungsziele, Testbeschreibung” / “Modellsatz Erwachsene”), ÖSD, and telc. Boulingua is not affiliated with these institutions, and no actual stimulus material from any official model exam is reproduced; only the structural parameters (number of parts, item counts, timing, scoring weights, rubric dimensions) inform the format YAMLs. All stimulus texts on the sites are original to S. Le Boulanger.

Boulingua is a free, openly licensed multilingual teaching platform created by S. Le Boulanger. It is built for language teachers and learners working in the German school system — specifically Gesamtschule — and for international learners of German following the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

The platform brings together teaching units for three languages — English, French, and German as a foreign language — alongside a curated hub of free, openly licensed teaching resources. EFL and FLE units are organised by school year (Klasse) and curriculum-aligned, including Niveau-Differenzierung (G / M / E). The DaF units follow standard examination formats and are organised by CEFR level (A1 to C1).

Six principles shape every decision behind boulingua.

Open access

Education materials should be free to use, share, and adapt. Boulingua draws only on openly licensed sources and publishes everything under open licences — MIT for code, CC-BY-SA 4.0 for content. No paywalls, no logins, no tracking.

Curriculum alignment

Units are not generic. Every lesson maps to specific competencies — by school year and Niveau for the language curricula, by CEFR descriptor for the international track. Alignment is the work; the rest follows from it.

Boulingua consists of four sister sites. Three deliver curriculum-aligned teaching units for English, French, and German as a foreign language. The fourth is a curated hub of free teaching resources.

EFL — English as a Foreign Language Link to heading

A complete English-as-a-foreign-language curriculum spanning Klassen 5 through 13. Around 180 units cover listening, reading, writing, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary. Every unit is curriculum-aligned and includes Niveau-Differenzierung at the G, M, and E levels.
