Theo plays football on Saturdays. Mia reads books in her room. Frida the fox does nothing in particular. “Doing nothing is a hobby,” Frida explains. “For foxes it’s a serious skill.”

Mime corner. The teacher mimes a hobby (reading, swimming, painting, cycling, dancing). Class shouts the English word.

Hobbies: reading, drawing, painting, dancing, playing the guitar, playing video games, cooking, gardening. Sports: football, basketball, tennis, swimming, running, cycling, skateboarding.

- Can you ride a bike? — Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
- He can play the guitar. (no -s on can; no -s on play)

Common pitfalls Link to heading
- He cans swim → ✗ — can never takes -s.
- I can to swim → ✗ — can + base verb only.
- Pronunciation: can and can’t are easy to mix up; can’t is longer and stronger.
