Lead-in story Link to heading
Theo opens the front door. The hallway smells of bread and rain. To the right is the kitchen, with its loud fridge and quiet kettle. The living room has a large window onto the courtyard. Down the hall is Mia’s bedroom — door always almost shut, never quite open. Frida the fox arrives at the back door, wet and polite. “I won’t go in,” she says. “I just like to be invited.”

Differentiation — support (below Niveau E).
Complete the letter with your own words. Fill each gap and add one sentence of your own.
- Dear ______, this is my home.
- There is a ______ in the ______.
- There are two ______ in my room.
- My bed is next to the ______, and there is a lamp on the ______.
- There isn’t a ______, but there is a ______ in the living room.
Extension (above Niveau E / Oberstufe).
Write your pen-pal letter as Frida the fox would — the polite guest who watches from the back door but never comes in. Describe the home only through what she can see, hear, and smell from outside, and let those there is/are details quietly suggest whether this is a warm home or a lonely one, without ever naming the feeling. Then add two sentences explaining which word choices you used to build that impression.
Common pitfalls Link to heading
- There is two beds → ✗ / There are two beds → ✓.
- some in negatives sounds wrong: There isn’t some lamp → There isn’t any lamp.
- L1 trap: German Es gibt always → there is/are.
